Congratulations to Home Run Hegemony!

Rookie team Home Run Hegemony (Rank 8th during regular season) overcame many difficulties during its first of the Fall Season to earn the Tournament Champion title. The final score was 7 – 6.

It was a rainy Saturday afternoon on October 18, 2008. Twelve teams and 100 people descended upon the Foggy Bottom bar known as McFadden’s. Over the next three hours, they faced off against one another for the coveted Golden Keg award. But nine kegs later, only one team remained victorious! Congratulations to The Bloody Show from the Adams Morgan Division and captained by Matthew Mullin. A huge thanks goes out to everyone who made it to the last two DCKickball Volunteer events. Volunteers helped out at the DC Green Festival and also helped prepare food at the DC Central Kitchen which prepares over 4000 meals a day.

The fall season is winding down but DCKickball has one last volunteer event before our winter hiatus. We will be volunteering at the DC Central Kitchen on Saturday November 22nd from 9:00AM to 12:00PM to help prepare meals for the needy. We’re approaching the holiday season and life is pretty good for the majority of us kickball players so let’s take a chance to help those less fortunate.

The DC Central Kitchen conducts a wide variety of programs such as counseling, meal preparation, meal delivery, and training on how to prepare healthy food on a budget. Washington DC is the city of DCKickball so let’s take a few hours to make it a better place.

The DC Central Kitchen is located right near the Judiciary Square Metro (Red Line).

DC Central Kitchen
425 2nd St. NW
Washington, DC 20001

Parking around this area can be difficult so the metro is probably your best bet for getting there. If you are interested in helping out, send an email to me[AT]matt-toigo.com Volunteer slots are limited so RSVP quickly.

The DC Green Festival is a huge gathering of everything that’s new in sustainability, alternative energy, and education on how to live a greener lifestyle. Organizations and business come from around the world to conduct lectures, sell products such as organic beer and whine, conduct workshops, watch documentaries, sample international vegetarian cuisine, and listen to music. You can find out more about the event here.

DCKickball needs volunteers from 9:00AM to 1:30PM Saturday November 8th to help on the Green Team. We will be helping to educate visitors on the efforts of the Green Festival and also encouraging people to dispose of any recyclables properly. Volunteers will receive:

A free pass into the festival all weekend ($15 value)

A free reusable shopping bag

10% Discount on Any Green Festival Merchandise

Hey everyone! Your president here. This is my fourth term as District President (apparently there are no term limits in DCK). I like to think of my job as ensuring that everyone gets skunked and has so much fun they don’t remember it. Based on previous data, I think we’re succeeding.

Why you should know me

If you’re nice to me I’ll buy you free drinks….but in all seriousness folks, I’ll buy you free drinks. I’m also hiring for the position of DCK Dick Cheney. So if you want to do all the work and let me make all the grammar mistakes, we’re golden. Just don’t shoot any of my friends in the face. That’s my job (see next heading).

Why you should fear me out on the fields

My great habit of nailing the ball right into peoples’ heads. Yeah, it might not be legal, but you should at least learn how to duck. Oh, and if you forget to take home the equipment, I will unleash my wrath.

What I do when I’m not kicking

I get to test human DNA! Yep, that’s right, good old ATCG! (10th grade biology flashback anyone?)

Position

I am resisting making an easy dirty joke about this subject heading. Let’s just say I play shortstop when they let me.

Lauren Riordan (That’s What She Said…) – VP of Communications

This is my fourth season with DC Kickball…second season on the board. I’ve taken the reigns as email guru and have been dubbed the VP of Communications. Almost every bit of information that needs to be relayed to teams and/or captains comes from me. I’m working hard to become a friend of your inbox

Why you should know me

Other than being a wealth of DCK information (or at least knowing who does have the information), I am a one-flip wonder at The Exchange…and have found myself flipping for any team who will have me. (And getting them to the W).

Why you should fear me out on the fields

I can make it to first base in 0.005 seconds… And I will always show up to the games in spandex.

What I do when I’m not kicking

Event Coordinator by day, Karaoke Diva by night.

Position

I am half of TWSS’s right field wonders…

Ashley Bristol (That’s What She Said…) – Social Chair and Awkward Avoidance Officer

Ashley was late turning in her bio, so we’ll take this opportunity to let you know that she’s a Leo (rawwwr!), likes men who can stand her inordinate obsession with Virginia Tech football (come on, at least pick a real football team Ash!), and wears spandex A LOT! Oh yeah, and she kicks ass on the fields and the flip cup table.

Anna Fisher (Balls Deep) – Charity Event Coordinator and Jack Daniels Consumer Extraordinaire

My name is Anna – but for those of you that played in the summer league, you may remember me as the loud-mouth native Pittsburgher who was the co-captain of Balls Deep. More often than not, I’m known for breaking out in song and dance while waiting for people to get organized for flip-cup (I personally blame the ADD), occasionally dancing like a fool to Michael Jackson or Your Love by The Outfield, and organizing large-scale games of Speed Quarters. If I’m not doing one of the above, I can usually be found at the bar ordering shots or Jack on the rocks. A little about me – I went to PITT, relocated to DC last year, and have taken on the role of corporate recruiting for TRAK downtown (conveniently located directly across the street from the local liquor store). I’m new to the board this season, and ready to mix it up with some great events and – of course – flip cup tournaments.

Why you should know me

Other than the fact that I’m just all around wicked awesome (that’s right – I said wicked), I’ll be the one to talk to if you’re interested in participating in any charity events and giving back to the community. Although we are quite the bunch of partiers/drinkers, we’re still good people and can’t wait to help our Nation’s Capitol and its charities out whenever we can. If you have any great ideas or charities that you currently support, feel free to contact me, and I’ll do my best to pull something together
Additionally, my brain hosts extensive knowledge of drinking games – and I’m great at teaching.

Why you should fear me out on the fields

I don’t catch like a girl. I may or may not be known for extreme intimidation as well.

What I do when I’m not kicking

I get people jobs in the DC Area, so if you’re looking for one, I’m your go-to I work hard, and have been known to party much, much harder (worldwide).

Position

Pitcher – oh, and GO STEELERS. Being from Pittsburgh, I feel I’m obligated to say that at least once in here

Jason Kurtis (The A Team aka TAT) – Special-Ops Officer

This is now my 5th season playing DCKickball. For those of you that played in the past, you may know me as the captain of the red team, or TAT. It’s true we lost in the playoffs last year (so we had to switch things up and change to blue), but you can’t let one or two losses overshadow a perfect regular season (GO PATS). I went to American University and have been living in the DC area going on 7 years now. I work as a Producer and Video Editor at National Geographic.

Why you should know me

You should know me because I enjoy using extravagant gambles/strategies in games (kickball included) that often just barely help, and more often blow up and make thing much worse. Either way its entertaining.

Why you should fear me out on the fields

My teams had perfect regular seasons last season (Pats and TAT) and we’ve won 2 out of the last 4 DCK District division championships. I guess you could say we are the team to beat.

This was the first year for the event to raise awareness and funds to help fight prostate cancer. You can find results from the race here. We had 7 players on the DCKickball Team (all of whom managed to make it to their games later that afternoon).

DCKickball DID Stump Trivia

Trivia was definitely a lot of fun last night at Saphire Cafe in Bethesda. The Constitution Division had a great showing by the Drunken Dodgers (who fielded a full team of 6), Iain Scott from the Short Timers and, Beer Kills the Alcohol. The competition was fierce, with Beer Kills the Alcohol edging out Iain Scott’s team for the DCK win for 4th place overall (everyone in the bar). Free food and beer was enjoyed by all and the night was a success. If you missed it, feel free to regret your other plans :)

An academic perspective on Flip Cup

Flip Cup is a team-based drinking game similar to the drinking relay competition known as “Boat Race.” Although the origins of this game are unknown, records suggest that college students at Hoboken, New Jersey, have been flipping cups since 1987. In Flip Cup, two opposing teams of eight players each stand on opposite sides of a table facing one another. In front of each player is a plastic cup filled with approximately 2 ounces of light beer. The first player for each team traditionally salutes each other at the start of each round by bringing their cups together and placing the cup back on the table. The first player of each team then drinks his frothy beverage. Once consumed, the player places his cup “mouth up” at the edge of the table. That same player will manually attempt to flip his cup upside down, “mouth down”, on the table. Generally, the two-finger lift is the preferred method of flipping a cup. If the cup fails to land mouth down, the same player must continue to attempt flipping his cup until it rests mouth down. Only after the first player is successful may his next teammate proceed by attempting the same maneuver. This sequence of events will continue until one team succeeds by drinking and flipping all of its cups in sequential order.

Spring/Summer 2009 Registration

Please check back in January 2009 for Spring/Summer registration. Thanks for a great 2008, and have a wonderful holiday!

Here are answers to some common questions:

What’s the deal with permits and fields?

Generally, fields in DC are permitted by either DPR (think Adams Morgan) or the National Park Service (the Mall). We submit our applications, just like all other leagues, and sit back and wait for the gears to turn. In the best case, we are notified by late February about our fields, but sometimes it can stretch into April for the fields on the Mall. We do our best to locate fields where people expect them to be when registering, but it’s hard to make guarantees. If the location of play or the night of the week changes as a result of how the permit applications worked out, full refunds are always honored.

How does the referral rewards system work?

If you are a veteran of DCKickball, your can earn $5 for every new player (someone who has never played DCK) you bring on board this season. Just log-in to your account to find out your unique referral code. Then (and this is crucial!) make sure the new player enters this code when registering.

Referral rewards are paid via PayPal after the season has started. Rewards can only be redeemed for registered and PAID players. Your registration fee must be paid in full before the rewards will be sent out.

For other questions check out our FAQ

DCKickball’s Calendar
